How Kitchen Plumbing Works with a Garbage Disposal

logo-image

A garbage disposal makes kitchen cleanup fast and easy. You rinse food scraps down the drain, flip a switch, and it’s gone. Simple, right? Well… not quite.

There’s a lot happening under your sink every time you use the garbage disposal, and understanding how your system works can help you avoid clogs, leaks, and costly repairs.

When something does go wrong, the uniformed and trained team at Mr. Rooter Plumbing is here to help. Whether you need emergency plumbing repair service or even a full garbage disposal replacement, we’ve got you covered.

What Happens When You Turn On the Disposal

When you flip the switch, the garbage disposal starts spinning a plate inside the unit. This plate pushes food waste against a grinding ring. Instead of sharp blades, most disposals use force to break food into tiny pieces.

Planning a Remodel? Don’t Ignore Your Pipes

A remodel is one of the most exciting investments you can make in your home. New countertops, fresh flooring, updated fixtures and the possibilities feel endless. With all that planning, it’s easy to overlook what’s…

At the same time, water ought to be flowing from your faucet. This water helps carry the ground-up food through the pipes.

From there, food waste travels through the drain pipe under your sink, into the p-trap, out to your home’s main drain line, and then into the sewer or septic system. Each step of the way is equally important, and a hiccup can stink!

The Role of the P-Trap

The P-trap is the curved pipe under your sink. It may not look like much, but it’s very important: It holds a small amount of water at all times to create a seal that keeps bad sewer gases from coming back into your kitchen.

It also catches small debris. That’s helpful, but it can also lead to clogs if too much waste builds up. If your sink smells bad or drains slowly, the P-trap could be part of the problem. Many times, you don’t even need a plumber to clear out the P-trap, but a pro always helps!

Why Water Flow Matters

Water is just as important as the garbage disposal itself. Without enough water, food waste won’t properly move through the pipes.

Always run cold water before, during, and after using your disposal. Cold water helps solidify grease so that it can be chopped up and pushed through the system. Without proper water flow, waste can stick to the pipes and cause blockages over time.

What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Put Down the Disposal

Even though disposals are powerful, they are not built for everything. They can handle soft food scraps, small leftovers, and even fruit and vegetable bits, but AVOID putting in the following:

  • Fats, oils, and grease
  • Coffee grounds
  • Eggshells
  • Fruit pits
  • Fibrous foods like celery
  • Starchy foods like bread, rice
  • Bones or hard items

If you think it’ll cause a clog, then it likely will. Some things are better off in the compost bin or trash, instead.

Signs Something Is Going Wrong

It’s probably time to call a plumber if you notice:

  • Slow Draining Sink: If water takes longer to go down, there may be a clog forming in the pipes.
  • Bad Smells: Lingering odors can mean food is stuck in the disposal or drain line.
  • Strange Noises: Grinding, rattling, or humming sounds can signal a jam or worn parts.
  • Leaks Under Sink: Water pooling under your sink is a sign something is loose or damaged.
  • Disposal Won’t Turn On: This could mean an electrical issue or a failed unit that may need a garbage disposal replacement.

It’s always better safe than sorry, and the team at Mr. Rooter is proud to offer emergency plumbing repair service. So, feel free to call or message at any time!
