Standing Water in the Shower? 4 Early Warning Signs Your Drains Are Crying for Help

Start With the Pipes Most at Risk

There are countless pipes running through a typical home or business, and each has a different freezing risk.

Pipes in heated interior spaces usually have better protection from extreme cold. On the other hand, plumbing in unheated garages, crawl spaces, attics, basements, exterior walls, and other exposed areas faces greater risk.

Start the winter inspection in the high-risk locations.

A few minutes with a flashlight can reveal a problem long before a frozen pipe reveals itself the hard way. Look for bare sections of pipe, especially around areas where cold air can enter. Gaps around doors, windows, vents, and other openings can allow freezing air to reach plumbing.

Wrap Exposed Pipes With Insulation

Pipe insulation offers one of the simplest ways to protect plumbing. Foam pipe sleeves work well for many exposed water lines. They come in different sizes, so the insulation should fit snugly around the pipe without leaving large gaps.

Remember, insulation does not create heat. Instead, it slows heat loss and gives the water inside the pipe more protection during cold weather. For especially vulnerable plumbing, additional measures may help. A heating cable designed for pipes can provide extra protection.

Seal Cold-Air Gaps

Insulating the pipe helps, but protecting the surrounding space matters too. Cold air can enter through cracks and gaps around doors, windows, vents, and wall penetrations. That airflow can lower temperatures around nearby plumbing.

Weatherstripping and caulk can help close small openings while larger gaps may require a more substantial repair.

Think of it as giving the pipes a warmer room to work in. This tip protects more than plumbing. It can also reduce drafts and help the home retain heat during the winter.

Know Where the Main Water Shutoff Is Located

Every homeowner should know where the main water shutoff sits and make sure family members can reach it quickly. If a pipe bursts, shutting off the water can limit additional damage until a trustworthy plumber arrives.

If you cannot locate or close the shutoff valve, then find the nearest valve. After shutting off the water supply, turn on faucets or taps nearby to let out pressure.

If water has come into contact with electrical outlets, switches, or components, then evacuate the property and wait for the plumber in Lawrence Park, PA to safely handle everything.

Do Not Ignore Early Warning Signs

No amount of prep can completely prevent plumbing issues. A severe cold snap, power outage, damaged insulation, or an existing plumbing weakness can still create trouble.

It’s probably time to call for plumbing repair service if you notice weak water flow, unusual noises, damp areas, frost on exposed pipes, or sudden changes in water pressure. When in doubt, play it safe and contact Mr. Rooter.
